Air-drying
Rough sawn timber is stripped (that is evenly stacked flat between
uniform strips of wood to allow airflow) and left to air dry
in stacks for 6 months or more. The specially designed, natural
air-drying facility is one of the things that make our timbers
so resilient. This is an extremely
important part of Northern Rivers
Timber’s quality control.
Green timber can contain 50%
moisture or more. For timber to become fully seasoned and suitable
for long-term use, the moisture content needs to be reduced
down to between 9% and 14%, in accordance with Australian Standards.
By increasing the air drying time
(and slowing the rate at which the timber dries, the reliability
of the wood is increased to retain its shape and adjust to its
environment without warping or buckling. This reduces the long-term
risk once the floor has been laid, giving the owners peace of
mind and comfort with their new Northern Rivers Timber floor.
